Iwakuni IS PBIS Thumb

IWAKUNI – Iwakuni Intermediate School is proud to have established its STRIKE matrix of character traits, based on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. This initiative is supported by the PBIS Vertical Alignment Team (VAT) through monthly Focus Collaboration sessions. The STRIKE matrix is designed to create a positive school climate by promoting and reinforcing appropriate student behaviors. It outlines specific behavioral expectations across various school settings, with STRIKE standing for Safe, Trustworthy, Respectful, Involved, Kindness, and Engaged.

A key component of the program is daily student "Quick Checks." These checks are crucial for monitoring and reinforcing positive behaviors daily. By consistently tracking student behavior, staff can provide immediate feedback and support, ensuring that students understand and adhere to school-wide norms.

The program has been instrumental in promoting positive behavior by clearly defining and teaching expected behaviors. Each month, Iwakuni Intermediate holds assemblies where teachers and students perform skits to demonstrate what these characteristics look and sound like. These assemblies have significantly improved school climate by showing students how a positive and respectful environment enhances learning and social interactions.

Positive behaviors are also rewarded with STRIKE coupons, which students can use in the STRIKE ZONE store. Students can earn school pencils, extra recess, and participation in quarterly STRIKE celebrations. These efforts have led to reduced disruptions to learning. By consistently reinforcing positive behaviors with STRIKE coupons, Iwakuni Intermediate has seen fewer behavioral issues, allowing for more effective teaching and learning.

The success of the STRIKE program lies in its clear expectations. The STRIKE matrix provides a detailed guide for expected behaviors in different areas of the school, ensuring consistency. This proactive approach focuses on prevention rather than punishment, encouraging students to make positive choices. Teachers use data-driven decisions, regularly monitoring and analyzing daily student "Quick Checks" and behavioral data to make informed improvements to the program.

Additionally, the STRIKE program aligns with DoDEA’s strategic goals for Student Excellence by fostering a safe and supportive learning environment that enhances academic and social outcomes. It also supports School Excellence by promoting a culture of respect, responsibility, and kindness, contributing to overall school improvement.
